As the Executive Chairman of both the holding company overseeing this institute and the institute itself, I'm not exactly sure what the best way to present our exact design plans are. As a result, our team has setup an
(and I cannot stress this enough) extremely rudimentary skeleton for public viewing. However, this strategy is still inchoate and requires refinement.
ATTENTION!!: At the BILEN INSTITUTE, we are temporarily hitting pause on our weekly 3D design updates. Instead of chasing strict deadlines, we are shifting our full focus inward to the foundational architectural work required to bring the institute to life in Rochester. The 3D designs are still something we look to bring to life before the public Groundbreaking Ceremony, unless it happens to impede or obstruct our focus in bringing stakeholders together.
Below is the BILEN INSTITUTE's architectural presentation layer in 2D, reflecting the current massing and program logic that will guide the full capital design phase.
We decided to create a nighttime render as well!
For some reason, sketchfab doesn’t render the lighting textures properly the same way that it’s programmed within bledner. It legitametly ignores all the code responsible for the nighttime textures. As a result, we decided to work around that by shielding the institute with a solidworks ‘dome’, however if you simply zoom within the dome, you can visualize what the institute looks like at night!
This 3D model represents the concept massing for the BILEN Institute — the earliest architectural phase of a five‑floor, 100,000 sq ft research tower.
Concept massing is the first step in any large‑scale capital project. It shows the building’s footprint, height, proportions, and spatial logic before the detailed façade, interior programs, and engineering layers are added. (Personal note: This is NOT up to scale for a 100,000 sq ft. For reference: UCONN's Waterbury Campus Library is roughly 97k sq ft.)
BILEN Institute has already completed its $30M capital design phase. That phase includes thousands of pages of engineering work, structural analysis, laboratory specifications, regulatory filings, cost modeling, and technical documentation — the real substance of a major research institute’s design package.
What the public typically sees from a $30M design phase is not the engineering documentation itself, but the presentation layer: the massing model that illustrates height, footprint, proportions, and spatial logic.
Over the next several weeks, this model will evolve continuously as our design partners, founding donors, and engineering teams contribute their expertise.
The 3D model shown today is the first 1% of a $30M design package.
Large-scale research institutes are not designed in a single step — they evolve through thousands of engineering decisions, regulatory reviews, structural analyses, laboratory specifications, and capital planning cycles.
The model you see here represents the concept massing: the earliest architectural layer that defines height, footprint, proportions, and spatial logic.
Over the coming weeks, this model will be updated continuously as our engineering partners, founding donors, and design teams contribute their expertise.
No more strict weekly deadlines—we’ll be releasing new versions of the models organically as they're finished.
The full architectural package — including structural engineering, laboratory layouts, façade articulation, mechanical systems, and interior psychology/neuroscience suites — has already been completed as part of the $30M capital phase.
What remains now is the visual translation of that work into the final public-facing design.

Multiple elements in this document have already evolved through internal planning, engineering review, philanthropic expansion, and executive direction. The official architectural package — including renderings, finalized room configurations, and the complete design set — will be released on August 12.
Following the design reveal, the institute will proceed along its planned construction timeline:
February 14, 2027 — Groundbreaking Ceremony
October 2, 2027 — Construction Start
May 2028 — Initial Facility Completion Target
Because this document predates the final architectural phase, it should be understood as a rough conceptual foundation, not a finished representation of the facility. It demonstrates the scope, ambition, and scientific intent of the institute, but it does not capture the full refinement or precision of the forthcoming design plans.
Even as details evolve, the institute’s identity remains constant. The entire campus — every floor, every wing, every research environment — is unified under the name BILEN Institute. Individual wings may receive naming opportunities, but the institute’s core dedication is expressed through its architecture, its mission, and the intentional placement of art, design elements, and spaces that honor the influence that inspired its creation.
